Our son Jared plays for the Raleigh Warriors. We were at the game. They almost came back and won in the 7th inning. They were down 9-3 at the start. Then followed five or six consecutive hits and a walk. The game winning double play was a "line drive" to the first baseman, who caught it and tagged first. So it ended 9-7. It was a heart-breaker for our team. I hope the Stallions do well in the Homeschool World Series!

Thanks for your comments, Anonymous. I'm not sure what facts you want me to put out before I say something, though. I agree that Paul is probably the soundest on educational policy, and suggested so on another blog just a few days ago. I have more on Paul's position on education, courtesy Club for Growth, on this blog as well. However, it's also true that when I posted this entry, he was only polling 4.7% among Republican voters, and he's lost ground since; I didn't check the viewpoints of Tancredo and Hunter, for the same reason.

As I stated, homeschooling is a matter of personal interest, but most definitely it is not among the defining federal issues when considering a presidential candidate. I hope his supporters are in agreement with him for reasons other than this one piece of legislation (which, to be fair, was first introduced ten years ago, and which didn't pass while Republicans still controlled Congress, either).

Ron Paul is the only candidate to actually do something for homeschoolers on the federal level. He is working on a bill to be passed called the Family Education Freedom Act that will allow homeschool families to receive a tax credit for homeschooling their child/ren. i know this is your personal blog, but you should put all the facts out before saying some things. I have not made a decision on who to vote for, just I have been looking into issues of homeschooling with the candidates and Ron Paul keeps coming ahead 2 to 1 with this issue.

A few years back, homeschooling became a cottage industry. Many who had even opined against it - particularly some major "Evangelical" voices, suddenly were all for it - and had books to sell you.

Now homeschoolers are a sort after demographic of convenience.

Beware those who promise too much for any constituency. For the most part, they cannot deliver what they promise, even if they mean it.

On a slightly different angle, I agree wholeheartedly with you that people in churches have been too easily swayed by a designation, be it Christian, Baptist, or Evangelical. What has the man actually accomplished in the sphere of political leadership? What are his core beliefs - and what is his plan to put them into practice.

I see Hucabee signs on many lawns up here in Maine. I know the depth of understanding of many of these folk. And I worry.

Good post, friend.

I don't think it oversimplifies, Ken. You might qualify it to say "expected" ability to govern, in some cases, but I basically agree with you. At present I'm leaning more toward Thompson, who seems more driven by conservative principle, than Huckabee, whom my fellow homeschoolers and evangelicals seem most excited about.

I have been surprised at the number of people who are promoting candidates as the one to beat members of their own party, let alone the projected opposition nominee. The danger of a bitter primary fight is the chance that the nominee will have nothing left for the run up to the general election, and November '08 is not going to be about Giuliani and Huckabee or any other GOP hopeful - it's going to be one Republican, one Democrat. Can't forget that.

To paraphrase a Pixar character, this is turning into a sad, strange little election. It isn't improving yet, as far as I've seen.

Thanks for the question, sockmonkey. I've updated the original post.

FWIW, I usually do a wrap-up of the year's reading the first week or two of January. This year is a little light by number, about fifty titles, but some of them were slow if worthwhile reading (Dostoyevski, for one, and Tocqueville another).

Shouldn't we endorse a candidate based on their core values and beliefs and ability to govern rather then their ability to defeat another candidate we don't like? Or is that oversimplifying things?
